3 Private Houses, Fife.
This project is located in Anstruther, Fife. It is a group of redundant steading buildings that have fallen into disrepair. The site has uninterrupted views across open farmland towards the North Sea and the coastline of Dundee. The existing stonewalls of the original croft style buildings are still standing but the pan tiled roof and timbers have since collapsed.
We achieved an outline planning consent for three private residential properties in the early part of 2010. Our client instructed us to proceed with a Reserved Matters application for the houses. Our clients brief stipulated that these homes should be designed to the highest quality and a contemporary design approach would be welcomed.
The concept layout for the site was the result of us exploring the idea of extending the original stonewalls of the byres beyond the original building footprint and forming enclosed landscaped gardens. This opened up a sheltered private courtyard space to the rear of the new houses. These extended walls will provide a sense of connectivity and a continuity of materials running through all three properties. The stonewalls extend out from living spaces towards the gardens.
The majority of the houses will be built with a new construction. Framed steel columns will be expressed to a full height around the glazed open plan living quarters. The wall cladding will be terracotta coloured slim bricks with the gables being clad in vertical timber with an oil finish. The roofs will be of Zinc standing seam. The orientation of the houses ensures that there is no direct over looking of living accommodation.
